A quick summary of some of the most commonly asked blue roof design questions.
Yes, ABG blueroof can be installed on any flat or podium roof design up to 1:200 falls. A minimum 80kg loading for wind uplift is stipulated by BS EN 12056-2, typically achieved with a 50-100mm depth of washed pebble fill.
For approximately 95% of the time, the system behaves like a normal roof. Only in storm conditions is the weight loading increased, and from peak storage volume the system discharges at a continuous rate until the roof is half empty, released over a period of 12 hours.
Yes, owing to the fact that little additional loading is placed on the roof, the systems can be retrofitted.
A wide range of soft and hard landscaping surfaces can be used; from extensive green roof finishes to ballasted, paved or MUGA areas on podium decks.
ABG blueroof achieves up to 10 credits, accumulated from sections POL5 (3 credits), LE4 (2 credits), LE5 (3 credits) and LE6 (2 credits). Blue roofs are also identified as the most effective SuDS treatment method for reducing flood risk and pollutants, avoiding the need to excavate expensive basement storage tanks and the associated carbon output and safety risks incurred.
Yes, ABG do provide a comprehensive PI backed design & system warranty, typically for a term equal or greater than that of the Waterproofing System.
No, but preference differs from client to client. A Single Point Warranty may provide additional ‘peace of mind’ at the outset, but often at a greatly increased cost. With material costs continuing to increase, we recommend dealing with specialist manufacturers of each part of the build-up to ensure the best service, advice and price is attained.
No, but we work closely with waterproofing partners & contractors who will provide a specialist waterproofing system.
Yes, provided the waterproofing system has a BBA accreditation for zero falls.
Yes. Our preference is to maximise the attenuation performance of the blue roof by using the whole of the roof area. To achieve this, we have designed a range of systems to accommodate these loading requirements. These include fire tender access routes, refuse lorries and parking at Podium level or Air Conditioning Units, Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) and PV panels on higher level roof areas.
We simply ask you to complete an initial Design Brief Form (https://abg-geosynthetics.com/design-solutions/blueroof). From the brief we will produce a series of blue roof design calculations. This will be returned to you, without charge, as part of a formal ABG blueroof Design Calculation Report. This will be accompanied by a specification clause (if required) & standard section detail. As the project progresses, we will provide on-going support from pre-planning through to construction & on-going maintenance.
